Rekeying changes which keys operate a suitable lock. Repair addresses a function problem. Replacement changes the hardware. The least expensive option is not always the one with the lowest part cost, and the newest lock is not automatically the best fit for an older door.
A recently purchased home may need access changed even when the hardware is fine. A loose deadbolt with a worn faceplate may need repair. A corroded, damaged, or poorly fitted lock may be a better replacement candidate. The decision should follow the condition of the entrance and the customer's goal.
Try this before calling
With the door open, test the key and thumbturn gently. If the lock works smoothly while open but binds when closed, stop forcing it and mention that difference during the call.

New or repaired hardware should be tested in the way the customer will use it. Close and lock the door several times. Try each approved key. Check the inside thumbturn and confirm that the latch and deadbolt meet the strike without lifting or leaning on the door.
If the frame, hinge, weather seal, or door itself still needs attention, that should be separated from the locksmith work. Clear boundaries help the next repair go smoothly.
Before you approve the work
Make the scope easy to repeat back.
Ask what the proposed service includes and what conditions could change it. Labor, parts, vehicle systems, lock condition, time, location, parking, and additional damage can all affect the final scope. A useful explanation connects the recommendation to what was found instead of treating every call as interchangeable.
Make sure the person approving the job understands whether the plan is entry only, a repair, a rekey, a replacement, cutting, programming, or a combination. If hardware or a key component is being supplied, confirm which functions are included.
Finish with ordinary-use testing. Operate the lock with the door in its normal position, try each approved key, and check every electronic or vehicle function included in the agreement. If another issue remains, note it clearly.
